Island pride still intact

Bermuda left the Antigua Recreation Ground last night with their pride intact, despite suffering a crushing defeat against Bangladesh.

Bermuda skipper Irving Romaine felt that his team had given a good account of themselves against their Test-playing opponents on the famous ground where son of the soil Sir Viv Richards scored the fastest century (56 balls) in Test history in 1986.

“We went into the game very cautiously. But in the end I think we played at a level not far off theirs,” Romaine said.

“Our performance just went to show that we do have the talent but really have to push a little bit more.

“The guys definitely did well while even the crowd seemed surprised at how we played.”

While Romaine was pleased to see several batsmen get good starts, he again stressed the importance of capitalising on them and turning such innings into potentially match-winning totals.

“We had some batsmen score in the 20s and 30s in the middle, but realistically one of those scores should have transformed into a big score. But Bangladesh really showed us how it was done in the end.

“Their bowling was definitely tight because I think we had only 49 runs after 25 overs. So this really showed the importance of singles against tight bowling.

“We struggled and really didn’t rotate the strike as much as we should have. But we held our own and didn’t get bowled out. So we definitely have something to take from the match. And with the expectations we had going in against Bangladesh we really showed they are not as powerful as they thought.”

Romaine praised the Asians for the manner in which they tamed Bermuda’s spin attack led by Dwayne Leverock, who delighted the crowd with some excellent fielding in the covers, and understudy Delyone Borden who both went wicketless for 62 and 41 respectively.

“The way they moved their feet and played the spinners shows they have experience against spin,” Romaine added.

“But basically right now for us it’s all about getting the rotation going at the crease and improving on our bowling.”

As for Janeiro Tucker who hobbled off with a groin injury in the tenth over of Bangladesh’s innings, Romaine insisted the top all-rounder’s injury was only a minor one.

Tucker never returned to the field after his mishap but did take part in post-match stretches with the remainder of his team-mates.

“Janeiro just has a little twitch in his groin. But he looks okay and should be alright,” Romaine said.
