Bermuda slump to heavy defeat against Uganda

First Prev 1 2 Next Last

DUBAI SPORTS CITY (Uganda won toss) - Uganda, 249 for seven, beat Bermuda, 175 all out, by 74 runs.It might be that Bermuda just aren't good enough to be in Division Two of the World Cricket League. On this evidence there is certainly an argument to be made for that being the case, and yet, in a tight competition, one win could still preserve their High Performance status or better.Yesterday's defeat means that Bermuda, Uganda, Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea have all won once and lost twice.Even now though Bermuda are still third in the table by virtue of their better run rate, while Namibia, who crushed PNG yesterday, are second, and hosts UAE, who squeezed past Hong Kong, remain unbeaten.Victory in either of their two remaining games would as good as see Bermuda into the top four, unfortunately those are against Namibia today and UAE on Thursday, and they will need to improve 100 percent to stand any chance of beating either.Following the win over Hong Kong, head coach David Moore said he didn't want the result to ‘paper over the cracks' of the deficiencies in his side. There is no fear of that happening now, especially after another woeful batting display. In yesterday's defeat Bermuda failed to score off 184 balls, or 67.49 percent, of the 282 that they faced. Statistics though never tell the whole story, because that might have meant a sterling bowling performance from Uganda. And while the African side bowled well, with Roger Mukasa taking four wickets for 21 runs, they were allowed to do so by a Bermuda team that largely showed a complete lack of urgency, imagination, or attacking intent at the crease. All that in stark contrast to Ugandan wicketkeeper Laurence Sembatimba, yesterday's man of the match, who scored an unbeaten 66, and rescued his side from the tricky position of 118 for three.Chief culprit for Bermuda was Jason Anderson, who took 107 balls to score his 38 runs, and yet none of the batsmen in the team are blameless.Chasing 250 to win, at five an over on a big ground, was always going to require intelligent batting, good running, and an ability to keep up with the run rate.Collapsing to 41 for four then wasn't really part of the plan. David Hemp (nine) went early, caught at slip, Dion Stovell (10) got himself run out taking a suicidal single, while Chris Foggo and Fiqre Crockwell never really got started. In an attempt to inject some life into Anderson, and to a lesser extent Lionel Cann (44) Bermuda opted to take their batting power play as early as the 17th over. However, the pair managed just 22 runs in the five overs, not even keeping up with the steadily climbing required run rate.Overall they put on 74 for the fifth wicket, but it took them 21.3 overs in which to do so, and by the time Cann was eventually out the required run rate had climbed above eight an over. The main reason for the failure to score quickly throughout the innings was that Bermuda didn't force the issue. They didn't move in their crease, they didn't make the bowlers think, and they rarely worked the ball around enough to score more than three an over.Irving Romaine (16) tried, and hit 10 runs off his first full over, but the pressure of needing nearly nine an over got to him and he holed out to Uganda skipper Davis Arinaitwe on the boundary going for another big hit.His departure ended any slim hopes Bermuda might have had of saving themselves, but in reality the game had gotten away from them when Uganda were batting, and they just never got it back.Coming into the game on the back of a 205-run thrashing by Namibia, and with their now ex-skipper Akbar Baig sacked on the sidelines, Uganda might have been forgiven for folding entirely.Fortunately for them they came up against a Bermuda team who picked yesterday to put on one of their worst bowling and fielding performances since Moore took charge.Stefan Kelly aside, the bowlers were too undisciplined, too wayward, and the fielding sloppy.Still a bit of lucky for Kelly, who beat the bat on numerous occasions and it might have been a different story. As it was, openers Mukasa (33) and Arthur Kyobe (22) put on 60 for the first wicket, before Damali Bell eventually bowled Mukasa with a good ball that came back down the hill and hit his leg stump.Bermuda were still in it at that stage, and at 118 for three from 31 overs, following Rodney Trott's intervention to remove Kyobe and Hamza Almuzahim (28) would have fancied their chances of restricting Uganda to a low score.Sematimba, and Benjamin Musoke (55) had other ideas, and instead of squeezing the batsmen, Bermuda fell apart somewhat. The Uganda pair did nothing special, they just played one day cricket; working the ball into gaps, creating shots, moving in the crease to disrupt the bowlers and pushing every single as hard as possible. In the face of that adversity, Bermuda crumbled, and although Trott picked up two wickets, as did Stovell, there were far too many loose deliveries among the wicket taking balls.Sematimba and Musoke put on 91 in the 14.3 overs that they were together, only scoring three fours and three sixes between them, and set their side a platform for the 35 useful runs that came from the power play at the end of the innings.Daniel Ruyange gave his side the dream start with the ball when he accounted for Hemp, and by the time the 10th over came around Bermuda were already three down.It was a situation they never recovered from, and Bell was eventually the last man out with three overs spare.
