Jones hoping Tucker will have change of heart

Southampton Rangers cricket chairman Olin Jones reckons it’s only a matter of time before star cricketer Janeiro Tucker regains his appetite for the sport. The top all-rounder dropped a bombshell earlier this week when he resigned as Rangers’ coach and announced his retirement from both international and domestic cricket.A disillusioned Tucker cited declining standards and poor officiating among the chief reasons for severing all ties with local cricket.Jones, who is the father of Willow Cuts cricketer Malachi Jones, said Tucker’s passion for the game won’t allow him to stay in exile for long.“I definitely feel that Janeiro will be back because he loves the game,” the former Bermuda and Somerset Cup Match batsman added. “Obviously we would love for Janeiro to reconsider his decision but time heals all wounds and he’s just frustrated right now.”Jones added: “Janeiro is a Rangers man who is a big part of our programme and future so we will let the dust settle and then get together and see what’s the best way going forward. Janeiro is a very talented player and still has a lot of years left to play but it’s up to him.”Jones, who has also represented Bermuda at youth and senior levels in the past, believes that the burden of coaching and playing took its toll on Tucker.“It takes a lot to play and coach and make decisions every day and sometimes you need a break just to gather your senses and get yourself together,” he said. “It takes a lot from a player especially a big player like Janeiro to coach and play and sometimes it’s best to leave coaching alone and just play.”Jones believes that Tucker may have lost some of his appetite for the sport having already reached cricket’s pinnacle at the 2007 ICC World Cup in the Caribbean.“You get these guys who have played at a high level of cricket abroad and it’s hard for them to come back to Bermuda where the level has declined so much over the years,” he said. “These guys also have to put up with bad decisions (umpiring) and it’s a big change for them and after awhile you mature and want to do other things as well.”Tucker’s departure has left a huge void to fill for a Rangers team that has not enjoyed the best of times lately. As of yesterday Jones said no successor had been found for Tucker.“We haven’t really discussed that (new coach) but we have senior players around that can help out,” Jones said. “We have guys like Ryan Belboda and myself that can help out.”Rangers will be further depleted when promising duo Alex Dore and Christion Gibbons-Wade travel with Bermuda’s Under 19 squad to Florida next month. The club is also awaiting the outcome of skipper Dion Stovell’s disciplinary hearing. Tucker and Stovell were both summoned before Bermuda Cricket Board’s disciplinary committee to face charges of bringing the game into disrepute.“The next several weeks will be challenging for us because we have two regulars (Gibbons and Dore) going away with the youth team so that’s two places to fill there,” Jones said. “We also don’t know what’s going to happen with Dion so we might have to pull some guys out of retirement.”
