West End derby test for Cuts

Willow Cuts will face their second test of the season tomorrow when they put their unbeaten record on the line against Somerset at White Hill Field. In what is shaping up to be a crucial and highly entertaining West End derby, the two sides will be looking for maximum points and reaffirm themselves as major players in the league title race.Cuts got a key win over Southampton Rangers last weekend, moving ahead one of their chief title rivals, while Somerset lost their first match of the season, at home to Cleveland County.Cuts all-rounder Malachi Jones, who was the Logic Player of the Week, said he was cautiously optimistic his side could get the best of their western rivals and put further distance between the two clubs.“It’s a derby and a derby is always a match that can go any way and we are just looking to take them as a threat because you can’t underestimate anyone right now with the season being so early,” Jones said.“They may have a few players unavailable for the game and we wanted to give a few of our other players a run-out but felt we should go and get this win and put further distance between us and them.“They have a few matchwinners in their side. Jekon (Edness) is on good form at the moment with the bat and we will need to be ready for what the game gives to us.“They only have one loss and a win will come in handy down the road when determining the league standings and we want to be in the mix.”Although his side may be missing a few players for various reasons, Somerset captain Edness admitted it could be close.“The game tomorrow will be determined by the team who makes the least mistakes. We are a few players short this weekend but we are still looking to put out a strong team and a good performance.“It’s a derby and everyone loves a derby. The game can go either way and in the end you just have to be ready and prepared to go out and apply yourself.”Elsewhere tomorrow, St George’s travel to PHC while Western Stars entertain Somerset Bridge at St John’s Field.Rangers lock horns with Warwick at Southampton Oval, Cleveland and Devonshire Rec do battle at Wellington Oval and defending champions Bailey’s Bay make a short trek to Lord’s in St David’s to take on Flatts. All matches are scheduled to start at 11am.* Two Bermudians attending the Trinity College School in Ontario, Canada, were presented with special sports awards at the Spring Athletics Awards last Saturday.Ryan Parris received the E.L. Curry Cup as ‘best batsman” and Alex Alvera received the Seagram Cup for showing the ‘best spirit’ while playing for the Bigside team.* PHC’s Calvin Waldron has been named the Chivas Sportsman of the week.“Cal's contribution at all level's of cricket from BCB Executive member to youth coach exemplifies the true spirit of the community and sportsmanship in the best tradition of the game,” said a BCB statement.
