The Bermuda Cricket Board refused to budge when pressed for further comment on last weekend’s cancelled Premier Division Twenty20 clash between Somerset and Bailey’s Bay at Lord’s.Local cricket’s governing body confirmed via a press release that Bay were awarded the points after Somerset refused to play over a long-running dispute between St David’s County Cricket Club and Chris Douglas, their former captain, who is now a Somerset player.However, they declined to elaborate when asked by The Royal Gazette for their reaction to the matter and whether Somerset face having further disciplinary sanctions imposed for their actions.Instead, Cal Blankendal, the BCB executive director, referred this newspaper to the BCB statement confirming that Bay had received the points.“Further to the scheduled game that did not take place on Saturday 18 July, the BCB has awarded maximum points to Bailey’s Bay CC,” the statement read.When initially asked for comment, the BCB referred the matter to the respective clubs involved in the dispute that threw the new cricket season into controversy only two weeks in.Douglas, who also plays for Somerset’s Cup Match team, was banned from the grounds at Lord’s for unspecified reasons.Somerset only learnt of the player’s dilemma four days prior to the July 18 contest and sought a venue change up to the eleventh hour. However, their request was rejected, which led to the team’s decision against making the long trek east to face Bay. Jordan DeSilva, the Somerset captain, said he and his team-mates stand by their decision.“We do because we feel with better communication the game wouldn’t have been scheduled at St David’s to begin with,” he said.As for the consequences of their actions, DeSilva added: “Our stance last week was taken with knowledge that Bailey’s Bay will most likely get the points, and rightfully so they should.”St David’s have declined to comment until they issue an official release on the matter.Somerset are scheduled to play again at Lord’s on August 8 against Cup Match rivals St George’s.Meanwhile, domestic Twenty20 cricket continues today with a double- header at White Hill Field.Flatts Victoria will face the Bermuda Under-19 national team in the opening First Division T20 affair, starting at noon.Flatts are off to a flying start to the season having clinched back-to-back wins over Western Stars and Somerset Bridge in their opening two fixtures and will now look to build on the momentum against the winless Bermuda Under-19s.However, they can ill afford to take their rivals lightly as the latter put up a good fight against Cleveland County in their previous outing before losing by a mere three runs at Lord’s.Today’s other contest at White Hill will pit Premier Division Twenty20 champions Southampton Rangers against Somerset, starting at 4pm.Rangers have gotten their title defence off to a solid start having comfortably disposed of Bailey’s Bay and Willow Cuts in their opening two matches.Somerset are winless having lost to St David’s in their season opener before last weekend’s debacle over banned player Douglas.Twenty20 action then continues tomorrow with matches at Somerset Cricket Club and Lord’s.First Division rivals Warwick and Western Stars will both go in search of their second wins of the season when they lock horns at Lord’s, starting at noon.That match will be followed by the Premier Division Twenty20 contest between St David’s and Willow Cuts.Elsewhere tomorrow, First Division Twenty20 rivals Devonshire Recreation Club and Somerset Bridge will meet at Somerset Cricket Club, starting at noon.Bailey’s Bay and St George’s will then do battle in the following Premier Division Twenty20 contest starting at 4pm.
