Derrick Brangman will not play for Bailey Bay’s against St David’s if the two teams meet in the Eastern Counties final at the end of next month.

As per county rules, Brangman is locked in to play for Bay, the club that picked him as a colt in 2017. On Saturday, his all-round exploits handed Bay victory by ten runs over Flatts in the first round at Lord’s to extend their reign as champions.

Gus Logie’s side will play Cleveland County on August 16, with St David’s waiting for the survivor of that encounter in the final on August 30.

After Bay’s victory on Saturday, the 37-year-old, who was named player of the match, addressed the lingering issue of playing against a club side he captains in league cricket.

“I don’t have to make a decision. Everybody knows I’m not playing in the last round,” Brangman told The Royal Gazette.

“I am just playing in the first two rounds of the competition. My dad is the coach of St David’s and I’m the captain, so I won’t do that to my team.

“If I play and Bay win, that would really hurt the St David’s fans. I’m not sure they would still want me as their captain if I did that.

“I won’t even attend training if Bay make it to the final. I’ll just watch the match and my loyalty will be divided on that day. I might as well get a two-in-one shirt for that day.”

Last year, Logie revealed that they would have not put Brangman in a tight spot by asking him to play against St David’s at Lord’s. Luckily for the player, the match never took place because of the passage of Hurricane Ernesto.

That paved the way for Bay to face Flatts in the final, where Brangman scored a team-high 31 and picked up three wickets. His exploits earned him the Man of the Series as well as the Stanley Smith Trophy for Spinner of the Series.

It was the second time that the Bermuda player had won the two accolades, after he did so as a colt in 2017.
