Cup Match Stats: Terryn Fray continues rise up rankings
Most Runs and Batting Averages
Somerset captain Terryn Fray continues to lead all active players with the bat. He is now ninth in most runs scored with 800 runs in Cup Match and third in the batting averages at 47.06. Only fellow Somerset stalwarts Janeiro “Mr Cup Match” Tucker and Colin Blades are ahead of him. These three are the only batters who average over 40 runs in the Classic.
Fray scored 117 runs in the 2025 Classic, with two half-centuries. He collected 60 in the first inning and 57 in the second. This is after scoring 99 runs in the 2024 match.
Fray’s 800 runs moves him ahead of the likes of Cup Match stars Noel Gibbons, Champ Hunt, Sheridan and Eldon Raynor, Rupert Scotland and Arnold Manders in runs.
Kamau Leverock slipped down the batting averages slightly from ninth to twelfth with an average of 34.08 and has scored 409 runs in the Classic. He remains just ahead of St George’s brothers Wendell and Clay Smith, who both average 33 in the Classic.
Leverock, along with Terryn Fray, Dion Stovell, Tre Manders and Malachi Jones all sit in the top 30 of Somerset batters. In contrast, only Macai Simmons and Onias Bascome are in the top 30 for St George’s.
Somerset’s recent dominance can be traced in part to the performance of their early to middle-order batters in the top 50 of most runs and leading batting averages. This includes Terryn Fray (800 runs, avg. 47.06), Dion Stovell (599 runs avg 33.28), Tre Manders (518 runs, avg. 32.38) and Kamau Leverock (409 runs, avg. 34.08). In contrast, St George’s have only one player in the top 50 of each of these two categories. Macai Simmons has accumulated 434 runs and now averages 27.13.
The 98 runs scored by Delray Rawlins in the only St George’s innings last year moved him up to 34th on their all-time chart. He is now level with the retired Allan Douglas Jr with 307 runs in the Classic.
The 28 runs scored by Macai Simmons for St George’s last year pushed his aggregate score to 434 runs in the Classic. This effort moved him up just above the legend Dennis Wainwright (429 runs) in the St George’s all-time runs list and slightly above Lee Raynor in the batting averages. Simmons averages 27.13 and Lee Raynor finished with a batting average of 27.11.
Batting Partnerships
A fifth-wicket partnership of 94 between Delray Rawlins and Onias Bascome in their only innings in last year’s classic was the only St George’s partnership of note. Albert Steede and Sammy Robinson also put on 94 for the fifth wicket back in 1998. Charlie Marshall and OJ Pitcher hold the record for the fifth-wicket partnership with 168 in the 2006 Classic.
The highest partnership in Cup Match was recorded in 1974 when Rupert Scotland and Lee Raynor put on 229 runs for the 6th St George’s wicket. Scotland is the grandfather of 2024 St George’s colt Marcus Scotland.
Brothers Wendell and Clay Smith posted the highest second-wicket partnership in Cup Match. They put on 220 for St George’s in 1992. Wendell is now a leading Cup Match commentator, while Clay is the St George’s coach. Clay was also involved in a 200-plus fourth-wicket partnership when he and Charlie Marshall posted 212 in 2003. In the history of the Classic, there have only been three instances of a partnership in excess of 200.
Most Wickets
Malachi Jones, who is set to retire this year, continues to lead active players in this category. Jones bagged three wickets in last year’s match. It should be noted that Somerset only bowled once. This effort of three for 56 by Jones moved his Cup Match tally from 55 to 58 wickets and places him sixth. His wickets cost him and Somerset an average of 17.86 runs per scalp.
Derrick Brangman’s two for 38 last year moved his tally to 42 wickets in the Classic. Brangman’s total brings him level with St George’s stalwart George O’Brien, who retired in 2022. Brangman’s tally is two more than the 40 his team-mate Dion Stovell has snared. Stovell was wicketless from his three overs last year and gave up 26 runs.
Somerset have four active bowlers — Malachi Jones (58), Derrick Brangman (42), Dion Stovell (40) and Kamau Leverock (25), included in the leading wicket-taking category. They have a cumulative Cup Match haul of 165 wickets. St George’s have no active players in this category in which a minimum of 20 wickets is required.
Dion Stovell & Malachi Jones – Special Mention
These two outstanding Cup Match cricketers are set to retire at the close of play this year. They have both been good all-round Cup Match cricketers.
Dion comes into his last match with: 40 wickets - placing him as the thirteenth most successful wicket-taker; best bowling in an innings of seven for 27 in 2024; 599 runs – fifteenth among the Most Runs Scored; batting average of 33.28 – fifteenth best performance; top score of 139 in 2023 and the ninth highest individual batting performance; two Centuries - 111 not out in 2022 and 139 in 2023; century partnership of 105 with Jordan DeSilva in 2019; Safe Hands Award 2024 and MVP on four occasions
Malachi comes into his last match with 58 wickets, which places him sixth among all bowlers in Cup Match; 369 runs, with an average of 16.07 and a highest score of 57. He is 28th for Somerset in all-time runs. He has also taken 11 catches
