Police probe two gun incidents in 24 hours

Police officers responding to reports of a shooting were involved in this road crash on St Mary?s Road, Warwick outside the Salvation Army Cedar Hill Corps building. One of the men on the motorcycle was arrested as a ?person of interest? in the shooting outside the Hayward?s supermarket on Middle Road, Warwick.

A 26-year-old man was arrested minutes after five shots were fired outside Warwick Preschool.The shooting took place at 12.13pm yesterday on Middle Road, near Haywards Supermarkets and the St. Mary's Anglican Church.It was the second gun incident to happen within 24 hours, a firearm was recovered after an attempted robbery at Belvin's in Devonshire, on Tuesday.Yesterday, Police said no one appeared to have been seriously injured in the Warwick shooting.Acting Superintendent Anthony Mouchette said: “The information we now have is that they were fired from a moving bike with two people on board.”Minutes after the shooting a 26-year-old refused to stop for police a few feet from the incident on Cedar Hill.A Police spokesman said both vehicles were then involved in a collision.The police car ultimately mounted the bike, and a wall, on Cedar Hill, although the rider was not injured. The spokesman added the man was arrested as a person of interest.The principal of Warwick Preschool, Diana Dill, said her 80 students were safe throughout the incident.“They aren't really aware of what has happened,” she said. “We have emergency procedures and it worked today.“You have to be buzzed into our school and we have video cameras. Our school was locked down and police officers visited.“Everyone is fine here.”Nearby TN Tatem and Purvis Primary were also on lockdown yesterday with officials from the Ministry of Education checking in.A spokesman for the Ministry said: “Out of an abundance of caution, the schools all responded with standard safety and lock-in procedures which ensured that although there was no threat to children and staff, learning could continue.”Police did not give a description of the bike, or the two passengers, involved in yesterday's shooting but appealed for witnesses to contact police at 295-0011 or the independent confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hot line on 800-8477.It was the second gun related incident within 24 hours.At 10.44pm on Tuesday a man entered Belvin's store and brandished what was believed to be a firearm and demanded cash. He ran off empty handed and no one was injured.A Police spokesman said: “Two men were arrested and are now in police custody in connection with this matter and a firearm was also recovered.“An active police investigation into this incident is underway. Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen anything or anyone acting suspiciously to contact police or the Crime Stoppers hotline."
