Desmond Fountain sculpure recovered after theft

Artistically minded thieves briefly stole a sculpture by celebrated artist Desmond Fountain.

Two thieves made off with the sculpture from Elbow Beach on Thursday, it was recovered the next day.

A Police spokesman said two unknown white men in grey shirts and jeans removed the sculpture ‘On the Ball’ from the South Shore Paget property at around 3.45pm.

The pair escaped with the $85,000 sculpture in a blue and grey coloured Hyundai car. However, with the help of members of the public, police recovered the sculpture in Paget on Friday evening.

The spokesman said: “The Bermuda Police Service would like to thank the public for their assistance in locating the Desmond Fountain statue ‘On The Ball’.

“The sculpture was recovered in the Paget area around 9pm Friday, February 3. Inquiries into this matter are ongoing.”

The sculpture is described as a life-size bronze statue depicting a boy sitting on a football.

Mr Fountain’s sculptures have been targeted for theft in the past, but forgery has historically proven a greater threat to the artist, with numerous knock-offs around the world.
