Armed robbers raid gas station

Three armed robbers charged into Raynor’s Service Station last night wielding knives and a gun, demanding cash from frightened staff.

Business owner Reginald Raynor said that while the suspects escaped with some cash, he was simply thankful that no one was injured.

“The only good thing is that nobody got hurt, and we’re thankful to God for that,” Mr Raynor said. “They’re shaken up, but thankfully nobody is injured.

“It’s just sad that this seems to be a common thing these days in Bermuda.”

According to a police spokesman, at about 8.40pm, officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Middle Road, Southampton gas station.

The spokesman said: “It appears that three individuals, brandishing what appeared to be a firearm, made demands of money and made good their escape in the area. No one was injured, and there were no shots fired.”

Mr Raynor said he was sleeping when he received the call that the business had been robbed and ran to the store before even putting on his shoes.

He said, based on what he has heard, the robbers came from the western side of the building on foot, possibly climbing over a small wall.

He said one of the robbers wielded a handgun, but the other two used knives to threaten staff. During the robbery one of the suspects reportedly held a blade to a staff member’s neck while demanding cash.

While Mr Raynor said the men did get some cash during the robbery, he estimated they escaped with only about $50.

He said that while the gas station has a total of 21 CCTV cameras around the property, the robbers all wore dark-visored helmets and other clothing around the lower part of their faces to mask their identities.

“What I cannot understand is why it is taking so long for the Government to ban these crash helmets with dark visors,” he said. “Do they need to get another of these overseas experts to help them before they ban these helmets? It’s something so minor that could make a difference.”

As of press time last night, police had not released any description of the suspects, with a spokesman saying officers were still actively canvassing the area to collect that information.

“We have officers in the area from the Forensic Support Unit, the Serious Crime Unit and the Western Criminal Investigation Unit and we are putting together the details as we speak,” he said.

Police are asking that anyone with information, or who may have seen men acting suspiciously in the area, contact 295-0011 or the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-8477.
