Motorcyclist banned for drink-driving

A motorcyclist who crashed while almost three times over the legal alcohol limit was yesterday fined $1,200 and banned from driving for 18 months.

Paulo Medeiros was also fined a total of $1,400 for having no third-party insurance, riding an unlicensed cycle and having no driver’s licence on October 15.

Magistrates’ Court heard that the 42-year-old slid out as he turned right on to Reid Street from King Street at about 4.50pm.

Police arrived as he was being assessed by emergency medics and officers saw he had scrapes on his hands and arm.

Asked if he had been drinking, Medeiros replied: “Yes, two beers.” Officers could smell alcohol on his breath and noticed his eyes were glazed.

He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station, where a breathalyser test showed that he had 234 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — the legal limit is 80mg.
