A woman relived her shock yesterday after she found a man she had been trying to locate lying on a street with a knife wound as paramedics battled to save his life. RoseAnn Edwards, a Corporation of Hamilton councillor, said the discovery on Princess Street, Hamilton, had left her “devastated”. She added: “I was beyond words. I became very upset and I couldn’t function. Just to see him laying there and knowing I was out there looking for him.” Ms Edwards said the 60-year-old victim, who has not been named by police, was expected at her home on Saturday evening to do some yard work and that she had gone out to look for him after he failed to show up. Karl Outerbridge, who lives on Princess Street, said witnesses had told him the stabbing happened after the victim and another man got into an argument.Ms Edwards, who lives near by, said the stabbing was “senseless” and “cruel”. She added the victim was a “nice guy” who was always prepared to assist people in the neighbourhood. Ms Edwards said: “He was always trying to help.“He would do whatever you asked him to do, if he had time and if he didn’t he would make sure that he came back.“He cleaned cars, cut grass, removed trash — and he did it without any type of complaints.” Ms Edwards said that the man was liked by people in the area. She added that he also picked flowers for her and left them in front of her gate. Ms Edwards said the incident had caused flashbacks to a knife attack on her four years ago. She explained: “It just brought back memories. It was tough.” An ex-boyfriend slashed her neck with a hooked blade in her home and was later sentenced to 12 years in prison. Ms Edwards offered her condolences to the family of the victim. The incident happened near Princess Street’s junction with Angle Street at about 8pm.Mr Outerbridge said the incident was “horrific”. Mr Outerbridge added that he did not see the incident, but that two friends told him that they had witnessed it. He added he understood the victim had been trying to protect a woman when he was stabbed. Mr Outerbridge said: “He was looking out for her — as he always does.”The 52-year-old said that he had spoken to the victim last week.He added: “Everyone liked him.”Police said the victim was found facedown and unconscious on the road.Police and paramedics worked on the man at the scene and he was rushed to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for emergency surgery, but succumbed to his injuries.It is understood a man had been detained in connection with the incident. Chief Inspector Arthur Glasford added that the individual was “assisting police with their inquiries into this matter”. He said: “While the investigation remains in its early stages, there is nothing to indicate it is gang-related.” Police declined to say if anyone had been charged in connection with the death.Wayne Caines, the Minister of National Security, said at the scene on Saturday night, before the death was announced, that it was “a significant incident”.He added: “It’s just a sad situation. As a community, we are dealing with significant events around Covid-19.
