Police have seized suspected cannabis, $10,000 in cash and jewellery after raiding four homes.

Five people were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to import controlled drugs, firearms and ammunition into Bermuda, as well as money laundering offences, under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

The operation, which also included a search of a fishing vessel, was linked with the discovery of drugs that washed ashore two years ago.

A police spokesman said officers targeted residences in Hamilton Parish and Southampton on Monday.

The police drugs unit was backed by the criminal investigation unit, financial crime unit and tactical division.

Three illegal dogs were taken from one of the properties with the help of animal wardens.

Detective Chief Inspector Sherwin Joseph of the specialists investigations department said: “This investigation stemmed from the discovery of a number of packages, which washed up on our shores in October, 2020 and which were later found to contain controlled drugs”.

He added: “This method of illegal importation is particularly dangerous as it is designed to circumvent all security controls and capable guardians at our borders.”

The spokesman said the investigation was “at a critical stage” – and no further details would be given at present.
