Suspected bike thieves lead police on high-speed chases

Police recovered three stolen motorcycles after two high-speed chases in Warwick on Monday.

In the first incident, a police mobile patrol unit chased two men travelling on a motorcycle on Spice Hill Road at about 11.30am.

The male rider and his pillion passenger sped on to Eastdale Lane with officers in pursuit, before abandoning the vehicle and escaping on foot.

But before officers could seize the suspected stolen bike, a third man arrived at the scene, mounted the vehicle and sped off along South Road.

The suspect abandoned the vehicle near Lighthouse Road in Southampton before officers in a second patrol car could apprehend him.

A search of the surrounding area resulted in the recovery of the suspected stolen motorcycle used in the incident, along with a second motorcycle which was also believed to have been stolen.

The second chase took place on Dunscombe Road at about 5pm after officers stopped a male motorcyclist who was wearing an unfastened helmet.

As roadside checks were being carried out, the suspect suddenly sped off, heading on to South Shore.

Police finally caught up with the man near Rocklands Road and the suspect, believed to be a 20-year-old Warwick man, was arrested on suspicion of stealing the motorcycle. He was also issued with traffic tickets for driving without a licence and an unfastened helmet.

Inquiries regarding both matters are continuing.
