Police raid in Pembroke

A sizeable police presence on Mount Hill Road in Pembroke included armed officers and detection dogs yesterday.

The incident shortly after 3pm is understood to be the execution of a firearms warrant.

Police appeared to centre on a residence off the main road near the junction with Bluff Lane and Overview Hill, in a densely residential area overlooking North Shore.

At least three police vehicles blocked off the road at the crest of Overview Hill, while others temporarily held back traffic on Mount Hill Road.

Police said that officers were “in the process of executing a warrant in relation to an ongoing investigation”.

The area has a troubled past with firearms incidents, including the fatal shooting in May 2011 of Lance Corporal Jason Smith, 22, of the Royal Bermuda Regiment, on Overview Hill, where an attempted shooting and a separate incident of shots fired occurred the year before.

Gunfire was reported on Mount Hill in 2012 and 2014, and a 20-year-old motorcyclist was seriously injured in a January 2016 shooting while driving on to Overview Hill.
