Courage of witnesses hailed in wake of murder trial
The Bermuda Police Service has thanked witnesses for stepping forward in a recent murder trial, commending them for showing bravery.
A police spokesman said that the BPS acknowledged and respected a verdict of not guilty handed down by a jury in the Supreme Court last week and reiterated its commitment to upholding the judicial process and rule of law.
The BPS praised the “courage, integrity and strong sense of civic duty” of witnesses who came forward and gave evidence during the investigation and trial.
Detective Inspector Jason Smith of the BPS crime division said: “These are qualities which stand in contrast to the harmful ‘no snitching’ culture that too often hinders justice from being served.
“Their actions reflect a belief that community safety depends on collective responsibility and the willingness of individuals to do what is right, even in difficult circumstances.
“The BPS celebrates their bravery and urges others to be inspired by their example.”
The spokesman said the BPS would continue working to build trust and encourage co-operation to ensure that all members of the community feel supported coming forward and sharing information to help bring offenders to justice.
He added: “Regardless of the outcome of the trial, the contribution of these witnesses represents an important step towards building a safer Bermuda — a Bermuda where witnesses, victims and families can voice their concerns and have confidence that their voices matter and will be heard.”
