Police warn residents about ‘prop’ bills in circulation
Police have urged the public to be wary about fake $100 bills in circulation that are labelled as being for use in film.
A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said that since the end of February, the BPS has received multiple reports of the counterfeit notes being used at local businesses.
He added: “One suspect has been identified and arrested, thus far.
“The BPS urges local businesses and residents to remain vigilant about counterfeit bills in circulation.
“A genuine US $100 bill contains a blue security strip, embedded with images that shift from 100 to bells, as it rotates in light.”
The spokesman said the fake bills so far have all included the same serial number, JE06161268A.
The bills also include telltale writing such as “For motion picture purposes”, “This is not a legal tender”, “Copy” and “In prop we trust”.
The spokesman said: “Store staff should refuse any transaction involving counterfeit currency.
“Anyone receiving counterfeit currency is advised to make note of the currency and description of the person tendering the cash.
“Call the police immediately on 211.
“Information regarding counterfeit currency can also be submitted through the BPS online community reporting portal, https://portal.police.bm.”
