Police warn against phone fraudsters as thefts continue

Police called for vigilance against fraudsters posing as bank representatives after residents had funds pulled from their accounts.

A spokesman said officers continued to get complaints over callers claiming to represent local banks.

Thieves claim to have spotted fraudulent account activity and request login credentials, then gain access and transfer the funds overseas.

Police reminded the public that bank representatives will never ask for personal account login credentials over the phone.

Anyone unsure of a call’s legitimacy should hang up immediately and contact the bank.

Any e-mails purporting to come from the recipient’s bank should be checked to see if their headers match the details of legitimate bank e-mails.

The spokesman said not to download or install any third-party software at the request of anyone claiming to be a bank representative.

He further urged people to have pass these recommendations on to any seniors they know, as the elderly in particular tend to be targeted.
