Arnold gets bronze at Caribbean Champs

Gabriella Arnold won her fourth career medal yesterday, capturing the bronze medal in the 15-18 year-old female road race at the eighth annual Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Aruba.The winner of the 44.4 kilometre race was Keiana Lester of Trinidad and Tobago with compatriot Oriana Thielman close behind in second.Bermuda’s Kamryn Minors finished the race in sixth.The male division saw Justin Ferreira finish fifth in the 15-16 category, while Shomari Steede's reportedly did well in his inaugural effort in the regional championship. His position couldn’t be confirmed.In the 17-18 year-old category, Nate Hartwig was the top local finisher in tenth place, while Deshi Smith was plagued by mechanical issues which saw him drop from the peloton and ride solo for the last five laps of the race.Nico Barclay finished one lap down one the main field.“After yesterday's time trial which saw strong performances by Smith and Ferreira, Team Bermuda should feel that this is the appropriate next level of competition for them and recognise how other countries in the region are going with their cycling,” said Bermuda Bicycle Association (BBA) President Peter Dunne.In the windy conditions of the time trial on Saturday, Smith was the top local cyclist in the 17-18 age group, crossing the line in 30 minutes, 51 seconds and ninth place.Hartwig was 11th, finishing the 18 kilometre course in 31 minutes, 51 seconds.In the 15-16 boys category, Ferreira completed his 12 kilometre distance in 24 minutes, 40 seconds for fourth place with Steede 11th in a time of 27:58.The Bermuda girls were led home by Arnold in fifth place and Kamryn Minors in sixth, in times of 19:43 and 18:34 respectively on their nine kilometre course.
