Mayho first to the finish in Prospect

Mayho won the Bermuda Road Race Championships

Dominique Mayho praised his Madison team-mates after claiming victory in the Bermuda Road Race Championships in Prospect yesterday

Mayho finished in a time of 2hr 55min 12sec, with Adam Kirk second in 2:56:17 and Gary Raynor third in 2:58:16.

“[Madison’s] tactic today was to just keep it attacking and whenever somebody got pulled back another person would go,” said Mayho, who was part of the Bermuda men’s team that placed second in the Town Centre Criterium at the NatWest Island Games in Gotland last month.

“These guys did really well and burnt everybody out. By the end of the third lap I made my move and Adam Kirk came with me. It stayed that way until the end.

“Adam was fading a bit coming up North Shore so I made one acceleration, got a gap, and rode from there.”

Mayho is looking to build on his impressive first season with amateur outfit Asfra Racing Team Oudenaarde in Belgium by qualifying for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April next year.

“The season has been pretty good so far,” he said. “Hopefully I can carry on until the end of the season. I’m going back to Belgium on [July] 23rd to finish it off. [Asfra] are a bigger team with higher expectations and there’s a been a bit of pressure. It’s been good so far.”

Nicole Mitchell, who won bronze in the women’s road race in Gotland, sealed victory in the women’s race yesterday.

Mitchell finished in 1:55:46 ahead of second-place Zoenique Williams (1:55:53) and Gabriella Arnold (2:00:32) in third.

“Zoenique, Alyssa [Rowse] and I managed to get a break going about halfway through the race,” Mitchell said. “We worked really well together and managed to open up a good gap on the rest of the field.

“Coming into the finish Alyssa sat up a little bit as she’s in the junior category and let Zoenique and I get out. Unfortunately Zoenique’s knee was bugging her so she didn’t have the kick she normally has.

“It was nice to see the teamwork, especially as the three of us have just come back from Gotland.”

Matthew Oliveira, a bronze medal-winner in the criterium in Gotland, was the winner of the male junior race in 1:39:34.

“There wasn’t much competition today as my team-mate and biggest competition [Kaden Hopkins] is away right now,” said Oliveira, who will compete along with Hopkins in the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bahamas from July 18 to 23.

Rowse, another medal winner in Gotland, was the junior female winner in 1:55:50.
