New Year resolutions

New PLP leader Marc Bean.

It’s that time of year. Many of us will be making New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, give up smoking and take more exercise. But how about making a few resolutions for others to follow. Here are a few of this newspaper’s suggestions — for others and for ourselves. The One Bermuda Alliance: For many there was a sense of relief that change had come when they won the election. Although faced with an enormous task, the OBA has to deliver and, importantly, it has to show transparency. The Country voted you in, the people will be watching. The Progressive Labour Party: After the shock of losing its Premier, and two Ministers, in the election, it must rally around new leader Marc Bean, show solidarity and become a highly capable Opposition. The Country needs an effective Opposition to provide checks and balances.Bermuda: Unite to fight the scourge of crime and to stop the country’s youth falling into the abyss of disillusionment. The Island is small enough to be a family — remember it takes a family to raise a child.Lastly, The Royal Gazette: to publish stories without fear or favour — but with fairness and sensitivity, to be a voice for all and to try and represent the views of the community, to uphold the basic principles of journalism, to seek to find justice where we see injustice and to abide at all times by the Media Council’s Code of Conduct.
