Schools’ joy at rising IB Diploma pass rates

Bermuda High School and Warwick Academy both boasted rising pass rates on the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme.BHS saw their pass rates rise from 76 percent to 82 percent this year, while pass rates for Warwick Academy rose from 72 percent to 88 percent.The average pass rate internationally for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma is around 79 percent.BHS Head of School Linda Parker said that 28 students at the school earned the full IB Diploma this year.Sarah Hopkin received the highest score in the class, earning 43 points out of a possible 45, placing her in the top one percent internationally.Amber Farrington and Julia Dunne meanwhile earned scores of 40 points.In total, Mrs Parker noted that 92 percent of the 2012 graduating class at BHS took part in the Diploma programme.“Unlike many IB schools around the world, we do not preselect students for entry to the full IB Diploma,” Mrs Parker said. “All students are given the opportunity to attempt this challenging programme.“BHS continues to confirm its mission of educating its students to the highest international standards and fostering confident, responsible global citizens.“We are proud of all of our IB students for their strong work ethic, focus and determination to achieve their best against the challenging IB academic standard.”Warwick Academy Principal Maggie McCorkell said that the 2012 class had achieved the best overall results in the school’s history.“In this, our 350th anniversary year, we are extra thrilled to report that our graduating class have achieved the best ever overall results for the school in the IB examinations.“Our diploma candidates have achieved an 88 percent pass rate, which is a significant increase over last year’s 72 percent and our previous best result of 76 percent.“While it is difficult to compare one year group to another, this group of students have impressed with their hard work and steady commitment to their goals.”A total of seven Warwick Academy students scored at least 30 points out of the 45 possible points, with Amanda Brown leading the charge with 37 points.Other high-scoring students include Megan Berry, Samuel Dill and Katrina Hassell. Ms Berry earned 35 points, while Mr Dill and Ms Hassell each scored 34 points.
