Heron Bay Primary School celebrated its 90th anniversary with a walkathon at the weekend.

The excursion was the first of many events designed to foster a connection between community and school.

Students, their families and neighbourhood friends left from the school’s gates on Middle Road and travelled along the Railway Trail to St Anne’s Road and back again.

Despite the rain, school principal Lisa Swan was pleased and said they had “a pretty decent turnout”.

She told The Royal Gazette: “Most importantly, we’re trying to bring the community back to the school.

“What we’re trying to do this year is reach out to the alumni to support the school with activities once a month.

“They’ve planned a church service at Vernon Temple next month and for the walk they created donation packets and goodie bags.

“We want to give alumni an opportunity to come back and feel like they’re connected to the school.

“Anywhere I go I meet people who tell me they went to Heron Bay.

“We’re really trying to give the school the pride that it deserves because it’s a great little school, it really is.

“The children are excited to be here and we want to make sure that it stays here for another 100 years.”
