Bermudians heading for top flight in Civil Service

And the winners are: this year’s six government scholarship awardees (Photograph supplied)

Six talented Bermudians are looking forward to working in the Civil Service after being awarded government bursaries to advance their careers.

The bursaries, valued at $20,000 a year and granted for up to five years, support Bermudians with an ambition to fill “critical roles” in the public sector.

Presenting the awards last week, Wayne Furbert, the Acting Minister of Tourism and the Cabinet Office, said the Government continually strived to attract “the best and brightest talent in Bermuda”.

Mr Furbert said: “The Bermuda Government’s bursary awards programme continues to make a meaningful impact by providing funding and recognition to exceptional individuals who have demonstrated dedication, determination and potential in their chosen academic pursuits.

“For more than 20 years, this has proven to be a successful government training and development programme. And we take immense pride in being able to shape the next generation of certified and qualified public servants.”

A ministry spokeswoman added that this year’s six recipients — who come from the healthcare, planning and estate surveying fields — will gain access to mentorship opportunities, networking events and resources “designed to enhance their educational journey and personal growth”.

This year’s awardees are:

• Chioma Lawrence, who is enrolled in a Bachelor of Science degree in Adult Nursing at Buckinghamshire New University in England and is expected to graduate July 2025

• Zyon Minors, who is enrolled in a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing programme at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and is expected to complete her studies in May 2026

• Alaysia Swan, who is studying pre-nursing at Delaware State University in the United States, and plans to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing

• Dejhah Burgess-Simons, who is studying for a Bachelor of Science degree in Adult Nursing at the University of Northampton in England

• Joshua Gilbert, who is studying dentistry at the London South Bank University and is expected to graduate in June 2026

• Keanna Gooden, who is enrolled in a master’s degree programme in real estate management from University of Salford in England

To be considered for a bursary award, applicants must: be Bermudian, have completed no less than five years of schooling in Bermuda, be 40 years of age or under at date of application, have been accepted into an institution of higher learning or are undertaking courses leading to a professional, specialist or technical qualification required within the public service, be in an undergraduate or master’s degree programme, and be planning a career in the public service upon completion of their education.
