Young people are invited to sign up to a government-run scheme to boost their abilities in horticulture and landscaping.

The deadline to apply for a place on the parks department’s Skills Development Programme was extended until Friday. People aged 16 to 35 are eligible.

Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, said: “We are happy to offer this extension and invite more young people to be part of a programme that has consistently paved the way to successful career paths for its participants.”

The Skills Development Programme offers young people the opportunity to enhance their life and technical skills to embark on a curriculum that can lead to full-time employment upon successful completion.

A spokesman for the department said: “It is known for its comprehensive approach to skill development, combining hands-on training in horticulture and landscaping with essential life skills lessons, including first aid, health and safety, interview techniques, budgeting and workplace expectations.

“Training sessions are conducted three days a week on a volunteer basis, fostering professional growth and a sense of community and social responsibility among participants.”

Colonel Burch added: “Almost every individual from our last cohort has transitioned into full-time employment, a testament to the programme's effectiveness and the dedication of our participants.

“This programme is more than just training — it's an investment in our youth, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to excel personally and professionally.

“We look forward to welcoming the new cohort, and seeing their development and contributions to our community.”

The Department of Parks encourages anyone interested in applying to watch this video, which features testimonials from previous cohort members.

The spokesman said: “These success stories highlight the personal and professional growth experienced through the Skills Development Programme, underscoring its impact on participants' lives and careers.”
