Students and recent graduates of Bermuda College will spend almost a month in three European countries.

A statement said 28 participants will live, study and intern in Belgium, Cyprus or Italy for 24 days through the new endeavour.

This initiative is financed by the British Government’s Turing scheme, which provides funding so that students from schools in Britain and British Overseas Territories can work and study internationally.

Lyndon Jackson, the interim director of the college’s counselling and career centre, said: “They reached out to all the Overseas Territories, but Bermuda College made it happen.”

He added: “For some students, it will be the first time in their lives that they will be independent. It will be a cultural immersion for them.”

Elisha Miller, a co-ordinator of student employment, said several parents have thanked her and other faculty for providing their children with the opportunity.

She said: “It’s then that you realise how impactful and life-changing this experience will be — that is what makes it so rewarding to be involved.”

Ms Miller, Mr Jackson and four other staff will accompany participants in Europe.

One participant, 22-year-old Bianca Veloso, graduated from the college this month and is travelling to Brussels, Belgium.

She said: “I have a passion for travelling and I want to experience a different culture, try different foods and meet different people.”

Cyniqua Anderson is studying art and design at the college and will intern with an interior designer in Salerno, Italy.

She said: “I decided to go back to school at 35, starting a whole new career, so I thought this internship would be a great opportunity to get experience, but also international experience in a new field.”

Participants leave for Belgium and Italy on May 31 and Cyprus on June 3.
