Bermuda High School is celebrating the fifth anniversary since the launch of its Innovation Centre.

The school said that after its opening during the 2020-21 academic school year, the centre had brought state-of-the-art facilities to the campus and schools across the island — along with its Joy Bluck Arts Wing and Alvin Ferreira Family Theatre.

On Thursday, BHS celebrated the donors who made the construction of the facilities possible.

Carol Swainson, the head of school, said: “Innovation for girls and Bermuda in general is essential in the 21st century. We have proudly shared these beautiful resources with the broader community in addition to the girls at BHS.”

Lily Butler, head student, who was in Year 8 at the time the Innovation Centre opened, said: “I think the Innovation Centre has given me a refreshing environment to learn in. The facilities for use, especially in the arts department, are amazing and have really benefited my learning throughout GCSEs and A-Levels, providing all the resources I could need to be successful in my studies.”

Cassie Furtado, a former BHS student who is now a primary teaching assistant at the school, said the completed facility “not only reflects a significant investment in the school’s future, but has also created enhanced opportunities for both students and teachers, supporting richer learning experiences and a more dynamic educational environment”.

The centre has numerous facilities including the Renaissance Re Creation and Innovation Space, and the Axa XL Computer Science and Robotics Lab.

The Innovation Centre was the driving force behind the introduction of the science, technology, engineering, arts and maths curriculum, celebrated annually through Steam Week. The school introduced the Rajeev Kapur Centre for artificial intelligence leadership in November, 2025.

Outside of academics, these spaces have also been used by the community for programmes including She Leads, the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition, various summer camps and conferences.

Lesley Cox, the board chairwoman, added: “From the beginning, our vision was to share this space with young people across Bermuda. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see the community embrace it through our programmes and partnerships over the past five years.”
