Hitches emerge on wording for summer camp online sign-up
The wording on online notifications sent out for summer camps has led to “confusion” in some cases for parents, the Department of Sport and Recreation acknowledged.
However a technical review of notices issued through the registration portal confirmed that the camp lottery process worked correctly and that placements were properly assigned.
The wording of notification e-mails and the clarity of instructions presented to parents within the portal caused uncertainty.
The confusion has caused consternation on social media, with one parent saying on Facebook: “At this point quit the online registration process for summer camp, since it’s too much of a job for you and just agree to let parents stand in line like it’s 1990.
“This is insane. To think that your also in charge of educating our children is wild.”
Owen Darrell, the Minister of Tourism, Transport, Culture and Sport, said: “We understand the frustration and confusion experienced by some parents and want to assure the public that camp placements were generated correctly.
“Our immediate focus is on improving communication, clarifying next steps for families and ensuring parents receive accurate and easy-to-understand information as quickly as possible.”
The department has taken on vendors to update notification templates, clarify instructions for parents, identify any failed e-mail deliveries and provide additional support materials to help families navigate the portal.
The team is also reviewing ways to consolidate multiple notifications for parents who applied for more than one camp or week to reduce further confusion.
Families in need of assistance can e-mail the support team at Osshelp@gov.bm or call the technical support line at 907-6767.
The department said that “at this time, there are no plans to rerun the lottery process”.
However it asked for patience as it continues to look into the scope of users affected and will give updates once the review is completed.
