Art Month, opening at hotel, aims to reach new audiences

Home-grown talent: Meet Us In The Onion Patch by Jahbarri Wilson is to go on display at The Loren throughout October (Image supplied)

Bermudian artist Jahbarri Wilson is to present a solo exhibition at The Loren at Pink Beach to mark the opening of Art Month.

The 2024 Bermuda Arts Council grant recipient’s show, titled Meet Us In The Onion Patch, is the fourth in a continuing partnership between the hotel and the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art designed to showcase local artists outside of traditional gallery spaces.

Risa Hunter, the executive director of Masterworks, said: “One of our more important roles as a museum is to create more opportunities for artists to share their voices.

“By extending beyond our own walls and collaborating with partners like The Loren, we’re able to provide platforms for Bermudian artists such as Jahbarri to engage new audiences and further their artistic practice.”

Mr Wilson’s art is described as a vivid blend of abstraction and loose figuration, both intentional and spontaneous.

His practice is driven by curiosity about Bermudian history, global cultures and “the expressive possibilities of painting”.

“At The Loren, we believe in creating a platform where local artistry can flourish alongside global voices,” said Penny Liebman Aaron, curator and art adviser to The Loren Hotels.

“Jahbarri’s exhibition embodies the spirit of Art Month by inviting both residents and visitors to see Bermuda anew through the lens of his imagination.”

Jasmine Furbert, director of visitor experience at the Bermuda Tourism Authority, which hosts Art Month, said: “Art Month is about turning discovery into itinerary.

“Exhibitions like Jahbarri Wilson’s don’t just reveal the soul of Bermuda — they give visitors a reason to explore, meet our makers and stay a little longer.

“We’re proud to support partnerships that grow the island’s creative economy and invite the world into our arts community.”

One of the earliest works on display, Star’erfolk, was created publicly during Bermuda’s first Art Month in 2023 and exhibited at the Bermuda National Gallery’s 2024 Bermuda Biennial.

The painting introduces Mr Wilson’s recurring themes of journey, discovery and self-reflection.

Meet Us In The Onion Patch will be on display from October 1 to 31 with a public opening reception launching Art Month on October 1 from 6pm to 8pm, in the Maree Lounge at The Loren.
