Two minor earthquakes were recorded near Bermuda on Monday evening but no one on the Island reported feeling the tremors.Both were 4.5 magnitude quakes and happened within 20 minutes of one another, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).The epicentre of the first, at 7.18pm, was 81 miles south-southwest of Hamilton and about 6.2 miles below the surface.The epicentre of the second, at 7.36pm, was 80 miles south of Hamilton and about 9.3 miles below the surface.Geophysicist Rafael Abreu, at the National Earthquake Information Center of the USGS, told The Royal Gazette there were no reports of anyone on the Island feeling the tremors.“They would definitely be considered minor earthquakes,” he said. “Being more than 80 miles away from the actual land mass [and] 4.5, we would not expect people to feel them.”Mark Guishard, director of Bermuda Weather Service, said: “At approximately 7.30pm local time on Monday evening, Bermuda Weather Service received a courtesy phone call from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii, indicating that an earthquake near Bermuda had been detected at 7.18pm local time.“The PTWC indicated that there was no tsunami threat to Bermuda or any other area.”Bermuda had its first earthquake in more than a decade on April 18 this year.The tremors only measured 4.6 on the Richter Scale but many Islanders felt it and some damage was reported.The epicentre of that quake was about 56 miles to the Island’s west-northwest and about 6.2 miles below the surface.Useful websites:www.usgs.gov, www.bios.edu, www.weather.bm.
