An environmental group has launched an education campaign to encourage youngsters not to use single-use plastics.

Beyond Plastic Bermuda’s programme — Say No To Single-Use Plastic, or #SNTSUP — will be available to all primary school pupils on the island and will be presented at school assemblies.

Katie Berry, of Beyond Plastic, said: “We are delighted to be able to bring this programme to students to encourage them to become more engaged in their community.

“Being aware of the environment and teaching students how to live healthily and sustainably is extremely important to their future.

“Beyond Plastic’s goal is to inspire future generations to live sustainably and care for their health as well as the health of the environment.”

The group has teamed up with the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute to deliver the assemblies.

The presentation consists of a 25-minute introduction to single-use plastics through an animated video and slide show. Students attending the presentation receive a 12-page activity book filled with ideas on how they can avoid single-use plastics at school and at home.

The programme is being sponsored by the telecommunications company One Communications.

Shira Jatto, the firm’s marketing communications director, said: “One Communications is proud to sponsor the Beyond Plastic initiative to eliminate single-use plastics.

“We look forward to joining this programme to educate the youth of Bermuda on the effects of plastic on our environment.”
