Harris on fire at fast track

Ozzing with confidence: Cameron Harris clocked the fastest time at Vesey Street at the weekend.

Harness driver Cameron Harris gave himself an early birthday gift during weekend racing at Vesey Street.Harris, who turns 20 next month, posted Saturday night’s fastest time competing in the 1:05 1:06/1 time bar to get a leg in the free-for-all.His time of 1:04/2 was also a lifetime best for five-year-old colt Track Patrol, owned by Micheal DeCosta, that exploited what Harris described as “perfect track conditions”.“The track was fast all night and the weather was perfect,” he said.Given the favourable conditions and track placement, Harris entered the heat oozing with confidence.“I expected a fast time because I had a rail,” he said. “All I had to do was make sure he didn’t gallop behind the gate and keep everything running smoothly.”Like his fellow rivals at the track, the Berkeley Institute graduate has set himself goals to strive for this season.“My goal is to win the five-year-old stakes races and have the pony in the free-for-all time bar up with the big boys like Big Red Machine, Abbey’s Dream, and Cherokee Superman. I have done one leg so far so I just need one more leg to be up there and I think I can achieve my goal.”Also basking in the limelight during the last round of racing was Harris’ fellow Inwood Stables stablemates Mike’s Shadow (Dylan DeSilva), Brona’s Mike (Kirista Rabain) and Cherokee Superman (Phillip Correia) who all clocked the night’s second fastest time of 1:04/3.Among the night’s double heat winners were Harris’ father Andy Stoneham (What-A-Sensation), Johnny Five (Fantastic Five), Isaiah Tavares (Mercedes Spence) and David Lopes (Pastor Paul). There were also multiple wins to be had for Samantha Hayward (Red Grand), Arthur Hurst (Just Call Me Willie), Mark Lindo (The Reel Machine) and stablemates Correia and DeSilva.Racing continues at Vesey Street on Sunday, beginning at 12 noon.
