Big Red Machine clocked the fastest time for the second straight week during weekend harness racing at Vesey Street.Colin Mello’s stud, which will retire from racing at the end of the season, recorded the fastest time of the season, running 1:03 flat in the Free for All during the Bermuda Cablevision Friday Night Series.Mello also pocketed a cash prize after being declared the winner on average time in the 1:04/4 and Faster time bar. However, the Driving Horse and Pony Club (DHPC) vice-president was denied the clean sweep in the Free for All after losing to half-brother, Cherokee’s Superman, driven by Philip Correia who had the second fastest time (1:03/1) of the night which tied his colt’s lifetime mark (personal best).Big Red Machine’s blistering start to the new season has taken driver Mello completely by surprise.“It seems like he’s getting better and better every week,” he said. “It’s still early in the season and I didn’t expect him to go this fast already on the third start.“But like I said before he pretty much does it all himself. I just sit there for the ride and on Friday night I never even called on him. He just did it all by himself for sure.“He’s a horse of a lifetime and I have to enjoy every chance I get behind him now.”Friday night’s event saw seven drivers emerge as multiple heat winners.Veteran driver Joe Vieira swept both heats in the 1:07/2-1:08/2 time bar, Lindsay Sousa achieved the same feat in the 1:06/1-1:07/1 time bar while Correia had two wins in the 1:07/2-1:08/2 and 1:04/4 and Faster time bars.Johnny Paynter swept the 1:08/3-1:10/3 time bar, Charles Whited won the 1:05-1:06 time bar while Keith Woodley and EJ Carreiro achieved the same feat in the 1:15/1 and Slower and 1:08/3-1:10/3 time bars respectively.
