Terceira riding high after GP win
Jill Terceira has reflected on her maiden victory on the Grand Prix showjumping circuit after her double clear round in Lyon, France at the weekend.Terceira, riding Bernadien van Westuur, was the only rider in a field of 78 to complete two clear rounds and topped an international field. As a two-star indoor competition, the course was not as demanding as many of the shows Terceira competes in although she insisted her win was definitely a career highlight.“I’m overwhelmed and very excited about the win,” said Terceira, who defeated a large international field of riders from Brazil, France, New Zealand, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, Denmark, Turkey, Canada and the United States.“It’s definitely my first Grand Prix win which is always very exciting. It wasn’t necessarily the biggest show of my career but definitely a highlight.“I think I’ve probably competed in 80 or 90 Grand Prix in my career so it’s great to get a win.”While Terceira was thrilled with her first victoryshe was more encouraged by the manner of her pefromance, especially ahead of a five-star competition in Vienna, Austria later this week.“There were 78 competitors and I was last to go. I was only the fifth clear and the only double clear so it was a very satisfying victory,” said the Holland-based rider.“Considering this was a two-star competition it was a bit of a lower level, although it’s a great confidence builder ahead of Vienna which will be basically at Olympic level a much higher level competition.”Terceira said Bernadien van Westuur had shown signs of things to come earlier in the show, placing twice with a pair of clear rounds, and also benefited from a rest day prior to the Saturday’s Grand Prix.“Bernadien van Westuur has had a very strong year and jumped a lot of clear rounds,” said Terceira, who finished tied in 47th position at the London Olympics.“The two classes during the competition she had two very nice clear rounds and was placed both days.“She had the Friday off which I think is always nice because they can get a little fresh before they pick up again.”She added: “I also had a second horse K Club Lady that jumped clear in a ranking class, which was a top class. I then had two faults in the jump-off but finished 15th which I was happy with because this was a horse that had come off an injury a year ago.”Terceira, who has three more indoor shows before her Christmas break, believes she is building up a fine rapport with Bernadien van Westuur.“It’s been very encouraging season both indoor and outdoor. I’m very pleased with our performances and how we are growing together and moving up the ranks together.“Everything is going well, I’m very pleased and hope equestrian overall can just get more support in Bermuda that’s always the key.”
