Waldron continues hot streak
Vain Waldron continued to turn heads during weekend harness racing at Vesey Street. The rookie driver moved up to a faster time bar after running a 1:08/2 in the 1:08/3-1:10/3 division with mare Night Nurse. It was the second straight week that Waldron’s pony has moved up to faster time bar having swept both heats in the 1:10/4-1:12/4 division the previous raceday.Waldron, who also swept both heats in the 1:08/3-1:10/3 time bar at the weekend, attributed his latest success to the hard work he’s put into training.“We have been doing a lot of hard training and we train every day,” he told The Royal Gazette. “I’ve done a lot of hard work with Night Nurse who has been off for maybe four years.“It’s been a slow process getting to know her but I think we are becoming a great team.”Waldron has set high goals for himself and his mare to strive for this season.“I just want my mare to do better than she’s done since she’s been in Bermuda,” he said. “ I just want my horse and myself to improve as the season goes on.“I’m hoping we get a blanket and the Improved Driver of the Year Award as a rookie. I also hope my stable (Random Stable) can win the award for the most wins with the horses that we have at our stable.”Waldron is the father of fellow rookie Kiwon who at 12 years of age is the youngest driver at the racetrack this season.“It’s a very enjoyable thing racing with my son,” he said. “It was great competing against each other when we first started off before I moved up to a faster time bar.”Also moving up a time bar was Keith Woodley whose Bermuda-bred filly Spirit of Bruna ran 1:15 flat in the 1:15/1 and Slower division.Woodley also swept both heats in the 1:15/1 and Slower time bar to cap a memorable day at the track.Track record holder Colin Mello and Joe Vieira were the biggest winners with three heats apiece.Mello had one win in the Free for All with stud Big Red Machine and two further victories in the 1:06/1-1:07/1 time bar with mare Cherokee Kibbitz.Big Red Machine also ran the day’s fastest time of 1:03/1 in the second heat of the Free for All.Vieira had one win with mare Colonel’s Finest in the 1:08/3-1:10/3 time bar and two other with gelding Down Home Punch in the 1:05-1:06 time bar.Remaining double heat winners included CJ Whited (Black & Mild) in the 1:05-1:06 time bar, Philip Correia (Cherokee’s Superman) in the 1:03/2 time bar and rookie Kiwon Waldron (Mercedes Spence) in the 1:10/4-1:12/4 time bar.
