Santo Cristo celebrations take to the streets this weekend
Bermuda is invited to enjoy a taste of Azorean culture this weekend as the Santo Cristo festival returns.
The Portuguese Cultural Association said the 2025 festival would feature a performance by Jessica Amaro, a well known Portuguese-Canadian musician, with a range of local talent.
A PCA spokeswoman said: “Her performances have run the full gambit of traditional and up-tempo Portuguese music and she also sings popular songs in English.”
Activities start at 7.45pm on Saturday with a special Mass at St Theresa’s Cathedral in Hamilton to commence the feast and move the statue of Senhor Santo Cristo out of the chapel to the Mount Saint Agnes Academy courtyard, where live entertainment starts after the Mass concludes.
Festivities include the In Motion School of Dance, Sierra DeSousa, Caroline Brown, the Vasco da Gama folklore dancers, the Casa dos Açores children folklore dancers and DJ Scoobay.
Festivities will resume at 1.30pm on Sunday with another Mass at St Theresa’s Cathedral leading into the festival’s iconic procession down Dundonald Street, Woodlands Road, Laffan Street and back to the cathedral.
Celebrations will then continue at MSA with a bazaar, baked goods, an auction and live entertainment.
The Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres — which translates as “Festival of the Christ of Miracles” — originated in the 1700s on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores, and has been celebrated in Bermuda for almost 50 years.
The festival is jointly organised in Bermuda by the Comissão Senhor Santo Cristo, the Vasco da Gama Club and the Portuguese Cultural Association.
Proceeds raised through the event will support St Theresa’s Cathedral, the Comissão Senhor Santo Cristo and the Portuguese School of Bermuda.
