Another milestone in Wollmann’s amazing year
This year is turning out to be an amazing one for Cecilia Wollmann.
The women’s Laser Radial sailor was yesterday named among the 15 athletes selected to represent Bermuda at next year’s Red Bull Youth America’s Cup.
The announcement came two months after Wollmann qualified for this summer’s Olympics in Rio at the Sailing World Cup in Miami, and just over a week after becoming the first recipient of the Junior Female Athlete of the Year award at the annual Sports Awards.
“I’m super happy to be given this opportunity and looking forward to sailing with the team once the Olympics are over,” Wollmann said.
“It’s going to be a challenging few months leading up to Rio training with the team and alone in my Laser for the Olympics, but I think both will be very beneficial for my sailing.”
Bermuda’s Red Bull team was chosen after last weekend’s final trial at the Oracle Team USA base and AC Endeavour West facility in Dockyard.
“It was a tough and tense weekend knowing what was on the line at the end,” Wollmann added. “But at the same time it was awesome to get a taste of high-performance catamarans.”
Connor Astwood, Edmund Cooper, Peter Dill, Preston Farrow, Na’eem Griffith, Philip Hagen, Kalin Hillier, Mustafa Ingham, Emily Nagel, Daniel Pell, Nicholas Pell, Owen Siese, Dimitri Stevens and Shomari Warner make up the remainder of Bermuda’s Red Bull team.
Jane Savage, the chairperson of the Team BDA Red Bull Youth America’s Cup committee, said those chosen “have shown extraordinary commitment” throughout the selection process.
“It is really gratifying to see young Bermudians with this much enthusiasm and drive and I am quite sure they will do Bermuda proud,” she said.
“I hope everyone will give them their fullest support. I also want to acknowledge the effort and commitment of those who are not advancing.
“All of them are talented, impressive young Bermudians who, as a result of this process, are better prepared for success in whatever they attempt next.”
The final racing team will consist of six Red Bull Youth America’s Cup squad members, with others supporting as training partners and a shore team.
The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup will bring the best national youth teams to Bermuda for racing during the next America’s Cup.
Six youth crews will compete in Bermuda through their affiliation with the America’s Cup teams. Up to ten additional teams will be selected by Red Bull Youth America’s Cup sport directors Roman Hagara and Hans-Peter Steinacher before December.
These top teams will then race in a qualifying series to determine the top eight who will compete in two days of racing scheduled during the week before the America’s Cup final.
Team Bermuda are being mentored by Oracle and as an affiliate of the defender of the ‘Auld Mug’ are automatically through to the Qualifying Series of the next Red Bull Youth America’s Cup to be held in Bermuda in June 2017.
The regatta will be contested in the same one-design AC45F foiling catamarans the America’s Cup teams compete in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series.
“The AC45F are possibly the coolest, fastest boats around and it’s going to be an epic journey learning how to sail them fast,” Wollmann said. “I am very grateful to have made the team and excited to be getting into catamaran sailing.”
