Nahki Wells scores for new club Luton in friendly

Nahki Wells makes his first appearance in Luton Town shirt

Nahki Wells opened his account at new club Luton Town after hitting the target in their 4-1 win over Colchester United in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

The Bermuda striker scored The Hatters second goal in a 2-1 win in the second of two 60-minute matches between the sides.

Wells scored with a simple first-time finish after being picked out in the box by Zack Nelson to bring the teams level after Colchester took the lead from the penalty spot.

The 35-year-old went close to grabbing a second with a shot that clipped the crossbar before Milli Alli converted Luton’s winner with a deflected effort from the edge of the area.

Wells also sent Alli clear on goal but was denied an assist after the latter’s effort brought a fine save from the Colchester stopper.

“Happy to get more minutes under my belt against Colchester. A goal, a win, decent performance and plenty positives for myself as an individual and us a group,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

Luton won the first contest 2-0 courtesy of second half tallies from Jake Richards and Lasse Nordås.

Wells joined the League One side last week after agreeing a two-year deal when his contract expired at Bristol City at the end of last month and joined up with his new team-mates for a training camp in Slovenia.

“Got to be in Slovenia with the team for three or four days that gave me an opportunity to get to know people a bit more personally,” he said.

“I got a few minutes while I was out there that was tailored and monitored to my situation and was then able to have a few sessions back here (England) before getting a run out Tuesday.

“It’s been a positive first week and happy with how it’s going so far and looking forward to get more minutes in our next three preseason games.”

The Bermudian forward is next in action in a preseason friendly against Gillingham on Saturday, with matches against Southend United on July 22 and Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur on July 26 also coming up.

Luton begin their League One campaign against t AFC Wimbledon at Kenilworth Road on August 1.
