Nahki Wells pleased with positive start for Luton
Nahki Wells is happy to have made a “positive” start with new club Luton Town at the weekend.
The Bermuda striker provided the match-winning assist in The Hatters 1-0 home win over AFC Wimbledon at Kenilworth Road on Friday night.
Wells clipped a ball into the box from the left wing that was headed into his own net by Dons defender Ryan Johnson five minutes from the end of regulation time in a game of few chances.
“I would have liked to have had more of an impact on the game in terms of chances, shots and things like that,” the 35-year-old told The Royal Gazette.
“That wasn’t to be but obviously to have an impact on the goal is something I can take as a positive.
“But most importantly we got off to a great start and it was nice to be under the lights at Kenilworth Road and start my Luton career off with a W. Hopefully it will be the first of many and hopefully goals come sooner rather than later.”
Wells, who had an effort from inside the penalty area blocked in the first half, joined Luton last month after his contract expired at Sky Bet Championship side Bristol City.
Expectations are high for Luton, who are preseason favourites to win the league after relinquishing their Championship status last season when they were relegated for the second straight year.
Wells is delighted his side came away with the points from their League One season opener despite having not been at their best.
“Happy to get the season off with a win but it wasn’t a great performance from us,” he said.
“We could have been a much more dominant side and created more chances and been much better in the final third.
“But the first game is always edgy. There is obviously pressure and a lot of new faces coming together in a short space of time, so it was never going to look pretty and performances are only going to get better.
“I’m happy we got the win because that’s the most important part and now we look to get another week of training in and come together.
“There are still new faces walking in the door every other day. It’s still a relatively new group and it will take time for us to be the side we will be in the future, and hopefully it will be a successful one.”
