Nathan Trott wins battle of Bermudians with Cardiff
Nathan Trott produced a string of fine saves as he came out on top of a battle with compatriot Nahki Wells on Saturday.
Trott was named man of the match in Cardiff’s 1-0 win over Luton Town in League One as he denied the home team, and Wells, on several occasions before Chris Willock’s 68th-minute strike secured the points for the unbeaten Bluebirds, who have moved to the top of the table.
Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy was pleased with the win and praised Trott for his performance.
“Nathan made some really good saves for us at key times, but I think all the lads deserved that,” he said.
“There were key elements of the second half that I liked, where we came under pressure and we put our bodies on the line, but still managed to play the way that we wanted to play at all times.”
Luton created ample chances but were unable to find a way past Trott, who has conceded just one goal in the league since joining Cardiff on a season-long loan from Danish side FC Copenhagen.
The first real chance for Luton fell to Bermudian Wells, who dragged his effort wide after being sent in the clear.
Trott then pulled off two great saves to deny George Saville and Lasse Nordås and ensure the game remained goalless at the interval.
The former West Ham player produced more heroics after the restart, getting a firm hand to Mark McGuinness’s header before denying Christ Mokosso, Jordan Clark, Millenic Alli and another McGuinness effort.
After weathering a dominant spell by Luton, Cardiff midfielder Willock popped up with the winner after a brilliant solo effort. Having run out of passing options, the former Queen’s Park Rangers player went alone, evading a tackle before firing into the far top corner.
While Trott and his side are looking down on the rest of the teams in League One, Luton, preseason favourites to win the division, have now lost two of their first five games of the season and are eleventh in the table.
After being relegated last season, the pressure is starting to grow on Matt Bloomfield, who was appointed coach in January.
