Nahki Wells thrilled with FA Cup goals
Nahki Wells is delighted to have played an integral role in Luton’s FA Cup first-round conquest of Forest Green Rovers.
The Bermudian scored twice and registered an assist as the Hatters survived a remarkable comeback by their National League opponents to prevail 4-3 in an epic cup tie in front of their own supporters at Kenilworth Road last Friday night.
Wells scored in the 30th and 53rd minutes after providing an assist for team-mate Lamine Fanne’s 23rd strike.
“From a personal perspective I am very happy with how the game panned out,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“We had a really good start to the game and I happened to get an assist early and ultimately get a couple of goals, which has been bearing on me of course.
“Having come into the club, it just hasn’t fallen for me but on Friday night it did, so I am very much happy with that. My performances have been very good but just lacking that end product in goals, and I am glad it all came together nicely.”
Sky Bet League One outfit Luton squandered a 3-0 advantage as the visiting side from two tiers lower staged a remarkable comeback to erase the deficit and send shudders through the home side.
However, just when it looked like extra time was beckoning, substitute Gideon Kodua thumped in the winner to leave Robbie Savage’s battlers gutted.
“I am delighted most importantly to get through to the next round,” said Wells, who will not be involved in Bermuda’s final 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Curacao and Trinidad & Tobago next week.
“It turned out to be an extremely tough game, which at half time we probably would not have anticipated. But that’s the magic of the FA Cup and they took us all the way to the wire.
“There are still elements of our game that we need to improve and collectively reflect on because you should never be giving a three-goal lead away.”
Wells was also delighted to see his team extend their winning streak to three games after beating Northampton Town 1-0 in the league and Brighton Under-21s in the group stage of the Football League Trophy in their previous two outings.
“Three wins caps off a really good week,” Wells said. “So happy where we’re at and the manager [Jack Wilshere] will be happy.”
Luton will now face Fleetwood Town in the second round of the prestigious competition on Saturday, December 6.
The Cod Army advanced courtesy of their 2-1 home win over Sky Bet League Two rivals Barnet last Saturday.
Also involved in FA Cup first round action last Saturday was Bermudian goalkeeper Nathan Trott, whose Cardiff City were eliminated after losing 1-0 to hosts Peterborough United at Weston Homes Stadium.
