Luton Town striker Nahki Wells was delighted after the Hatters halted a four-game winless streak with a 4-0 demolition of Wycombe in a lopsided League One contest at Kenilworth Road on Boxing Day.

The home side won with goals from strikers Gideon Kodua (2) and Shayden Morris and midfielder Jordan Clark as Wycombe paid the price for some poor defending.

“A very much needed win, that’s for sure,” Wells told The Royal Gazette. “I think everyone knew that was coming at some point.

“We were able to get the early goal and went on to have a comfortable game and win.

“It was nice to get an early goal and kind of kick start our performance. We played well and could have scored more goals.”

Wells, making his second straight start in Jack Wilshere’s squad since returning from an ankle injury, had a shot saved and was denied an assist as midfielder Lamine Fanne’s effort was blocked on the line by Wycombe defender Dan Casey.

“I felt I had a really good all round game,” said the Bermuda striker, who was replaced by fellow striker Jerry Yates in the 68th minute.

“I had the one chance, which the keeper made a good save on. So I’ve just got to keep battling away, keep focused on performance and getting myself in the right areas to score goals and when the chances come just make sure I take them.

“For me the most important thing is that we are winning games and moving to the top of the table. Still got some work to do but today’s result hopefully puts us in good stead.”

Former Wycombe player Kodua broke the deadlock in the seventh minute after capitalising on some poor goalkeeping. What appeared to be a routine stop turned into a howler for Wycombe stopper Will Norris as he allowed the ball to squirm underneath his body.

Kodua then doubled Luton’s advantage on the stroke of half-time when he latched on to centre-back Anders Hagelskjær’s stray back pass to Norris and tapped in his second.

The Hatters made it 3-0 on 70 minutes when Clark drilled home from close range after another Norris blunder.

Morris then rounded off the scoring eight minutes later after another error at the back as Wycombe midfielder Taylor Allen allowed the Hatters striker in to slot past Norris.

The result leaves Luton eighth in the division, three points adrift of the play-off positions.

Also getting back to winning ways was Nathan Trott’s Cardiff City.

The League One leaders edged Exeter City 1-0 at The Cardiff City Stadium, with midfielder Alex Robertson scoring the only goal of the game in the 53rd minute.

Bermudian goalkeeper Trott was not included in manager Brian Barry-Murphy’s squad for the second straight match because he is nursing a hand injury.

The Bluebirds hold a three-point advantage at the top of the table over nearest rivals Lincoln City.
