Skincare: the spring glow-up is about refinement
Summer doesn’t ask for a transformation, it reveals what’s already there. Skin is more visible, routines are lighter and the small details start to matter more. The glow-up, as it exists now, isn’t about changing how you look overnight. It’s about refinement: smoother skin, better texture, subtle maintenance and a level of care that reads as effortless but never accidental.
With summer just a few weeks away, we reached out to the experts to get the best advice on what to do to look and feel our best for the warm months ahead.
Kyjuan Brown, of Northshore Medical and Aesthetics Centre, and Ana Javier, of AJ Serenity, shared what they are seeing and what actually works.
“We’re seeing a move towards maintenance and refinement rather than heavy correction,” says Dr Brown. “Patients are coming in for skin quality treatments — hydration, pigmentation control, texture improvement. It’s less about changing how you look and more about improving how your skin functions.”
That shift is intentional. As summer approaches the appetite for aggressive treatments fades, replaced by something more measured.
“In summer, people move away from aggressive treatments and focus more on preservation,” he explains. “The goal becomes maintaining healthy, even-toned, well-hydrated skin while minimising downtime.”
That same mindset is reflected across the treatment room.
“It’s less about dramatic change and more about looking rested, radiant, and confident,” Ms Javier says. “People want to wear less makeup and feel good in their natural skin, so the focus becomes skin quality rather than coverage.”
It’s a shift that naturally brings attention to what the skin is actually dealing with this time of year. Heat, humidity, increased sun exposure and heavier use of SPF all play a role.
“There’s more awareness around pigmentation, dehydration, and congestion,” Ms Javier says. “It becomes about maintaining results in a realistic, consistent way.”
That consistency is what defines the modern glow-up. Not one-off treatments, not quick fixes, but a steady approach that supports the skin over time.
“The most beautiful results usually come from treatments that improve the skin itself,” she says. “Hydrating facials, gentle resurfacing, collagen-supporting treatments, lymphatic drainage — these leave people looking fresher and more radiant without anyone knowing they’ve had something done.”
Dr Brown reinforces that from a clinical standpoint.
“The best results come from improving skin quality rather than altering structure,” he says. “Treatments like Botox, microdermabrasion, light chemical peels and consistent use of medical-grade skincare products deliver a noticeable glow without looking artificial.”
There’s also growing interest beyond the face.
“We’re seeing increased interest in body treatments and hair removal as people prepare for more skin exposure,” Dr Brown added.
For Ms Javier, that aligns with a broader sense of preparation.
“People are also looking at body treatments, lymphatic drainage, sculpting, things that help them feel their best heading into holidays and summer events,” she says.
But if there’s one consistent misstep, it’s the instinct to do too much, too quickly.
“A common mistake is overloading the skin,” Dr Brown says. “Layering too many heavy, oil-based products can clog pores, trigger breakouts and worsen acne rather than improve the skin’s appearance.”
Ms Javier sees a similar pattern.
“Usually it’s trying to do everything at once — over-exfoliating, using too many new products, or booking aggressive treatments right before travel or an event,” she says. “It can backfire. Real glow is built through consistency.”
That idea — consistency over intensity — is what both experts return to repeatedly.
“Keep it simple,” Ms Javier says. “A good cleanser, daily SPF, hydration and one or two targeted products that actually suit your skin. You don’t need a complicated routine — you just need the right one.”
For those looking to elevate their results without committing to something time-consuming, targeted treatments can support that process.
“DermaFrac is excellent for boosting hydration and improving overall skin quality,” Dr Brown explains. “Microdermabrasion helps remove dead skin and enhance radiance, and Botox can soften fine lines for a more refreshed look. When paired with a simple, consistent routine, these can make a noticeable difference.”
But beyond treatments and routines, there’s another factor that plays an equally important role: environment.
“Sun protection is critical,” Dr Brown says. “In addition to daily SPF, incorporating antioxidants helps protect the skin from environmental damage.”
He recommends a layered approach.
“A vitamin C serum with hyaluronic acid and vitamin E can support skin health, improve brightness, and enhance hydration,” he adds.
Ms Javier frames it in simpler terms.
“With the heat, humidity, saltwater, and outdoor lifestyle, the skin needs support,” she says. “Daily SPF, hydration and protecting the skin barrier are essentials. Think of it as protecting your glow, not just chasing it.”
And while treatments, products and routines all play their role, both are clear that the glow-up doesn’t end there.
“Confidence plays a major role,” Dr Brown says. “Treatments can enhance features and improve skin quality, but how someone carries themselves is just as important.”
Ms Javier agrees.
“Confidence is everything,” she says. “When someone feels confident, rested and happy, it changes the way they carry themselves. That’s always what people notice first.”
That’s what the glow-up looks like for this summer in Bermuda. Not a dramatic shift, not a complete overhaul, but a series of small, intentional decisions that build over time. And as our experts shared, the focus should be on better skin, smarter routines, subtle treatments and a level of care that feels natural, not forced.
