Local artists joined forces with staff from an insurance company and a government ministry to paint a new mural at a Hamilton community centre.

Carlos Santana Dill-Trott designed the mural, which depicts a reimagined flower bed, and which was painted on a wall at the Sammy Wilson Central Zone Community Centre on Angle Street, which had been closed for refurbishment.

The work involved staff from the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation, Mosaic Insurance and local artists and was part of a public art project in government buildings.

Owen Darrell, the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, said: “It’s always a pleasure when we get to work with local organisations and businesses who want to give back in a lasting and impactful way.

“Last week, Mosaic Insurance staff and our team from the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation participated in a joint community giveback project. I want to thank all those involved for working to make this a reality, particularly the Mosaic staff for their commitment.

“Special thanks to the vision of our local artist, Carlos Santana Dill-Trott, who created this unique feature that we know will heighten the community’s awareness of SWCZCC. We believe this will help in our efforts to reconnect and rejuvenate this area of Hamilton.

“We are excited to welcome back our young people and our community centre facilitators following the lengthy closure of the SWCZCC. This mural is such a great way to greet them, and we hope it inspires our young people to unleash their creative passions. We are very keen to support all our Bermudian talent.”

Announced in the 2018 throne speech, the public art project allows local artists to showcase their work inside places such as the General Post Office, the Government Administration Building and the Dame Lois Browne-Evans building.
