The Mayor of Hamilton presented a $3,200 cheque to a charity that assists in funding medical treatment for children.

Charles Gosling met members of the City of Hamilton’s Social Committee to present the cheque to the Bermuda Shrine Club.

Mr Gosling thanked the club for its generosity, which he said was well-recognised within the City of Hamilton.

He said: “The choice of charity recipient is made entirely by the city staff which, to me, demonstrates the power of your outreach in the community, given that our staff recognise the positive impact you have on our island.

“Thank you for all the good work that you do.”

The Bermuda Shrine Club raises money for children in need of overseas medical assistance, as well as for Bermudian charities and helping agencies.

It has collected funds for Family Centre, Meals on Wheels and the Sunshine League in the past.

Hamilton Social Committee selected the charity as the recipient of the winnings of their annual Christmas raffle.

Martin Weekes, the president of the Bermuda Shrine Club, accepted the cheque on behalf of the charity.

He said: “This donation from the City of Hamilton today will go a long way in helping us to help other people and, in particular, children in need of medical treatment abroad if, for example, they get into a serious road traffic accident.

“At the Bermuda Shrine Club, we aim to distribute our funds to those children most in need.

“We accumulate monetary donations, which go towards helping young Bermuda residents requiring treatment for serious burns or cleft palate surgeries or in need of prosthetic limbs.

“We will pay for airfare and accommodation, while Shriners Hospitals for Children in the United States take care of the treatment, all at no cost to the patient or their family.”
