The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute will present three films produced by Black directors, actors and screenwriters, in honour of Black History Month.

AV Rockwell’s A Thousand and One, her directorial debut, will be shown on Friday at 7.30pm. Written and directed by Ms Rockwell, the film received the Grand Jury Prize at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

A BUEI statement described the film as “the complex tale of unapologetic and free-spirited Inez and her six-year old son, Terry, as they set out to reclaim their sense of home, identity and stability in a rapidly changing New York.”

AThousand and One includes actors such as Teyana Taylor, who starred in Stomp the Yard: Homecoming and Coming 2 America.

This film is rated R and will run for one hour and 56 minutes.

Pretty Red Dress will be screened on February 17 at 6:30pm.

The film is a British dramatic comedy that follows the characters Travis, Candace and daughter Kenisha and their relationship with the same red dress.

Pretty Red Dress is written and directed by Dionne Edwards and stars Black actors from musical theatre, such as Natey Jones from NT Live: Small Island and Together and Alexandra Burke from Sister Act The Musical and My Best Friend’s Wedding The Musical.

This film is not rated, and runs for one hour and 50 minutes.

All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt will be screened on February 18 at 4pm. Released last year, the drama is written and directed by Raven Jackson and produced by Barry Jenkins under his Pastel banner with A24.

According to A24, the film is a “a lyrical, decades-spanning exploration across a woman’s life in Mississippi”. A24 is the same studio for films such as the The Witch, Moonlight, Lady Bird, Hereditary, and Uncut Gems.

Rated PG, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt features newcomers such as Charlene McClure and Reginald Helms Jr. The film runs for one hour and 32 minutes. Unlike the first two films, tickets are available only at general admission pricing.

General admission tickets for BUEI’s Black Film Experience are $15. The big-screen package, which includes a complimentary beverage and snack, costs $25.

Additionally, filmgoers can enjoy 10 per cent off dinner at the Harbourfront restaurant if they dine before or after the film. Reservations are necessary and can be booked over the phone on 295-4207.

Tickets can be bought online on ptix.bm, by calling 294-0204, or at the Oceans gift shop.

Tickets for One Thousand and One and Pretty Red Dress are available at general admission and big-screen packages prices.
