Three former premiers will be celebrated at a special luncheon hosted by the Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast Committee.

The Second Annual Celebratory Luncheon will pay tribute to Sir John Swan, who served as premier from 1982 to 1995, Dame Jennifer Smith, who was premier from 1998 to 2003, and Alex Scott, who was appointed premier in July 2003, serving until 2006.

It takes place on March 10 at Willowbank Resort in Somerset.

Randolph Horton, the chairman of the committee, invited the community to attend “to help celebrate these three former premiers, as we express our appreciation for the tremendous sacrifices, commitments and contributions made that has helped to make Bermuda the country of which we are all proud”.

Sir John is a real estate developer and philanthropist who is regarded as a political luminary.

He was the longest-serving premier of Bermuda and helped to lead the country to the world stage as an international financial centre.

Dame Jennifer was the first premier who was not a member of the United Bermuda Party.

She became the first woman in Bermuda’s history to lead a political party to an election victory, the first Progressive Labour Party shadow education minister and the first woman Speaker of the House of Assembly. Dame Jennifer was the second woman to serve as premier after Pamela Gordon.

She is a member of the Council of Women World Leaders, an international network of current and former women presidents and prime ministers focused on taking collective action on issues of critical importance to women.

After the PLP victory in 1998, Mr Scott was appointed Minister of Works and Engineering. He took over as premier from Dame Jennifer.

In 1978, he served as one of the five members of The Pitt Royal Commission, which investigated the root causes of the 1977 riots. In 1983, he was appointed a member of the House Regulations Committee.

More information will be shared at the luncheon about the contributions of all three former premiers.

• The luncheon will begin at 1:30pm. Tickets are $95 and available from ptix.bm, at 27th Century Boutique and by calling 292-2665. Tickets must be purchased in advance as they will not be available at the event. Space is limited
