The Bermuda Regional Bridge Committee on Friday donated funds raised at a recent tournament to two charitable organisations.

The funds, which totalled $2,800 and were raised from a charitable event held on the opening night of the tournament, were given to the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre and The Lady Cubitt Compassionate Association.

“The regional committee selects a local charity or sometimes two charities, and the funds from the charity games are disbursed,” Stephanie Kyme, president of the Bermuda Bridge Club, said.

She said the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre provides volunteer caddies for team games of the tournament.

“We always make a donation to them,” Ms Kyme said.

She added that funds raised from the tournament “go towards our efforts to teach bridge in schools and to assist players to travel overseas and to improve their bridge”.

The tournament took place at the the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club between January 27 and February 2. Ms Kyme said 344 players took part in the tournament, and 241 of them were visitors.

She said the tournament had been running for 50 years when the pandemic hit in 2020.

“It was fabulous to revive the tournament for several reasons,” she said.

Ms Kyme said the island is the birthplace of the Bermuda Bowl, which was first played in 1950. Many countries compete for two years for the treasured trophy, she said.

She said funds from the tournament are also utilised to assist players to compete in the qualifying matches to play in the Bermuda Bowl. She said the Bermuda players took the bronze medal in the qualifiers, which were held in Panama in 2023.

“It would be very sad for the birthplace of the Bermuda Bowl to not hold any international tournaments any more,” she said of the regional tournament’s revival.

Ms Kyme said the event has long been considered the “best regional tournament” in the American Contract Bridge League for a number of reasons.

“Our hospitable and friendly people, and our classy venues and dress,” she offered as some of the reasons the tournament stands out.

She also noted special hospitality events after the games in the evening.
