A three-week course boosting the skills of corrections instructors from across the region on the use of force concluded successfully last week in Bermuda.

Instructors from other Overseas Territories including the British Virgin Islands, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and Montserrat took part in the training course which ran from April 1 to April 19.

The course, organised by Britain’s Ministry of Justice Overseas Territories Prison Programme, was held at the Department of Corrections CW Davis Training Centre and a local dojo in Warwick.

Gary Jenkins and Razvan Chirica, instructors with the UK's National Tactical Response Group, a specialist unit of His Majesty's Prison Service, delivered the class.

The newly qualified instructors are now trained to deliver the latest use-of-force syllabus to corrections staff.

It ensures a uniform standard of training that promotes safety and professionalism.

Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security said: “The success of this training course reflects Bermuda’s commitment to excellence and leadership in corrections training internationally.”

Mr Weeks added: “By hosting and participating in such high-level training, we demonstrate our dedication to equipping our officers with the necessary skills to perform their duties effectively and safely.

“This is important for promoting a secure environment within our correctional facilities and for the community at large."

Keeva Joell-Benjamin, the Commissioner of Corrections, said the course “underscores the department's dedication to the continuous professional development of its staff”.

She said it emphasised “the importance of being prepared to manage diverse situations”.

“The DOC extends its gratitude to the local dojo owner for their support and to all involved in delivering this training experience."
