A Portuguese-Canadian musician is set to perform in Bermuda this weekend for an annual favourite hosted by the island’s Azorean population.

Júlio Lourenço, who lives in Montreal, will be headlining the Santo Cristo Festival on Saturday and Sunday.

Several local acts, including Vision School of Dance, the Vasco da Gama folklore dancers, Caroline Araujo and the Casa Dos Açores children’s folklore dancers, will also perform during the free festival, which will take place in the Mount Saint Agnes Academy courtyard.

Santo Cristo is an Azorean tradition in which a statue of Jesus Christ, typically a Renaissance-style of the Ecce Homo, is venerated.

The tradition originated in Ponta Delgada in the Azores in the 1700s and has been celebrated by the Portuguese community in Bermuda for many years.

The weekend will begin with a mass at 7.30pm tomorrow, with another at 7.45pm on Saturday, both at St Theresa’s Cathedral in Hamilton.

A mass on Sunday, to take place at 1.30pm at the cathedral, will be followed by a procession to MSA.

In addition to live entertainment, the festivities, which will take place after the masses on Saturday and Sunday, will feature a bazaar, auction, raffle and food and beverages for sale.

All funds raised will support the Portuguese School of Bermuda, the Commissão Senhor Santo, Cristo and St Theresa’s Cathedral.
